I doubt there's anyone in this nation, or perhaps even in the world that doesn't recognize that last night's election was major milestone in US history. Regardless of if you believe in his politics, you have to acknowledge what happened: A black man was elected president of the united states. I was glad to be alive and a part of that historic event.

The evening went like this: Do shopping on the way home. Get home, turn on the tv to watch the less-than-1%-reporting forecasts. (someday, a statistician will have to explain to me the details of how they can officially "call" a state with such low levels of data. project, fine. call? i'd like more evidence) Max cooked up some burgers for us while we watched the presidential and all the MO races/amendments/props numbers grow on the screen. We took a break and watched Sunday's Family Guy only to return to seeing Obama with 140 to McCains 40. Had some drinks, kept watching ... kept checking our phones as Twitter was all a-flutter. When Ohio was called, it was definitely over. When California was called it was officially over.

She went to bed and I tried to play socom, but had to do a PS3 update, so while that was going, I watched McCain's concession speech (a very nice speech, btw, i thought). Then I waited for Obama's speech, but it was taking for-freaking-ever, and the couch had sucked me into it's grasp. I actually fell asleep during his speech. :( I expect it was everything we'd all expect, a respectful commentary on McCain, and more praise/preaching for hope and change he'll be bringing. I do remember hearing his say one thing that I think a lot of people aren't understanding. "It won't be done in a year, or even a single presidential term." ... The change he wants to bring isn't just going to "appear" on January 21st (the day after he's sworn). That also means, for all the anti-bamas, that the world will not end on that day either.

For the country, I'm proud to be a part of a movement that broke some long hidden race-barriers. For some individual states (*ahem, CA), I'm sad and embarrassed by their decisions to ban gay marriage. Seriously, CA banned it. Half of that state is gay and it was banned. I will never understand that one. I wonder if it will hold, if there's ever a federal proposition to legalize it? Doubtful.

Now, what's done is done, lets get back to watching Bush for the next two months - and lets see just what Obama is going to be able to do. I doubt he'll be able to do half of what he wants, offered and promised during the election. Some of that is good, some of that is bad. We shall see.

Oh, did anyone see the Hologram interviews on CNN???

they're not basing their call entirely on the officially reported returns. they're interpolating that data with exit polls, et. al.

and computers. there is always a computer involved. fucking computers.

however, it still seems incredibly... risky and disingenuous.

Yes, I agree ... The exit polls can be used as something to talk about - but I'm not sure how I feel about making calls with such low amounts of (real) data. those damn computers always fucking something up. heh

yeah.
i did. weird star trek stuff.

also, i'm pretty sure that at the end of mccain's concession speech, there was star wars music playing. i could be smoking crack, but it sounded a little too familiar for me.

i think most level-headed folk know that the change obama will put into motion is going to be part of the process and not the end result. at least, i hope so. otherwise, we should have just elected santa claus and david copperfield.

I only saw one hologram, and it was the guy from the Black Eyed Peas, and I thought; why the fuck are they talking to this guy?

I was hoping for floating heads.

Holograms?

I'll have to look that up.

The gay marriage California thing is frankly bizarre. I mean, even Arnie is against the ban.

Btw, your secret that you fell asleep during the Obama speech is safe with me. I thought the McCain speech was really, really good, actually. If I were Obama, I'd blow everyone's mind and offer McCain a cabinet post. I'm not tho, which tells you what I know.

I'm glad I watched the speech. It felt good to be able to see history being made.

I think it is a sad state of affairs that his color is relevant (positive or negative) at this point in time. Isaid something like you said last night...then after a few minutes Irealized that it made me sick that race was discussed at all.

it's impossible to ignore .. as much as it would be the best thing ever to remove racial differences from our eyes, we are human and we can't. unless we all just keep mix-breeding until we're all the same color. that's the only way it'll ever happen - but genetics won't even let that happen.

I respectfully disagree...what does race have to do with anything? Why can't humans do that? It's not like racial inequality has been part of the evolutionary process.

A completely homogeneous species is impossible, but I think the same RACE would be possible...have to do some research and talk to some folks about this one. Interesting...
